Poverty is not so visible in this area of Spain as maybe elsewhere and yet it is VERY real here. Without a comprehensive benefits system people rely heavily on the extended family and, if they lose their jobs, life gets very difficult.

The Yo Encuentro charity runs a Food Bank and distributes food parcels to people living around the Mar Menor; from the North end of the Manga strip through to Playa Paraiso, Playa Honda, Los Belones, Los Nietos and Los Alcazares. These include families and singles; British, Spanish, Moroccan and South American people. We have various drop off points for donations including the charity shop in Los Belones, various bars in the area and of course Salt Church Los Alcazares.

We are particularly grateful for any food items that any nationality can eat, so baked beans, black tea and any traditional British foods are not too good; and not too much pasta either as the Moroccans do not generally eat this. If everyone gave 1 item a month that would make up 3 more parcels a month, if everyone brought 1 item each week that would make up 12 extra food parcels a month.  Below is a list of items we particularly require this month:

  • tins of meat & fish
  • tinned ready meals
  • tinned fruit and vegetables
  • fruit Juice
  • chocolate powder
  • cartons of milk
  • jars of pasta sauce
  • tea, coffee, sugar
  • Flour
  • Pasta
  • Rice
  • Salt
  • Tomato Frito
  • Vegetable Oil
  • Olive Oil
  • toilet rolls
  • toiletries
  • cleaning materials

Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you how are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in. I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me. I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me. (Matthew 26:34-36, 40)
